The Hazelnut Project

Revitalization of our native hazelnuts through hybridized and native hazelnuts! Our native hazelnuts have been decimated by colonialism and hazel blight… Restore the once abundant and delicious nuts so that the community can come back together and sustain themselves with these delicious “Nutella” Trees!

The Perfect Urban Tree: shallow rooted, 4 meters maximum in height (very small tree), full sun to part shade, in the oak guild community, provides critical food for wildlife, flowers in the winter (something besides snow to look at). However, hazelnuts require cross-pollination, which means two genetically different varieties and compatible pollination periods are required for the tree to produce nuts. Hazelnuts are also sensitive to colder climates so accurate hardiness varieties should be selected. The Collective Forager is happy to provide information and history on many other native edible nut and fruit trees.

Nutella” Trees at the LEGS Community Gardens

The Collective Forager partners with the Lakeshore Environmental Gardening Society to provide and teach how to plant four hazelnut trees in the community garden at the Daily Bread Food Bank!

11 Hazelnut Trees planted within the Mimico community!

They require cross pollination with another tree so if you only have space for one, please consult with a neighbour at most 40ft away for successful reliable pollination! The Collective Forager facilitates community development by recommending planting in the front yard.
